Losing my job was great for my career.

Ironically, being let-go from my first full-time job was one of the best things to happen to me in my career. It didn't feel that way at the time, of course. I was devastated and ashamed, even though it wasn't for anything I had done. (I was at a dot-com start-up that ran out of money and let almost everybody go.) I spent eight months unemployed, wallowing in self-pity, never wanting to leave my house. (Because when you go out and meet someone new, one of the first questions you're asked is, "So, what do you do?") But I found another job. That one didn't work out either, but this time when I found myself unemployed, I had a better sense that things would be okay and approached things with a greater sense of confidence. And I moved on to something better. This self-confidence has allowed me to make better decisions in my career. While many people avoid taking any risks (however calculated) to avoid failure and a chance of being let go, I'm not afraid to do what I think is right for my business even if that may not be right for me. And if a good decision costs me my job? I'll move on to something better. If you're currently unemployed, stay positive! I know it's scary, but focusing on your fear won't help. Work hard, remain confident, and believe in yourself.
